Innovative therapeutic approaches for neurodegenerative diseases

Dr. Iuliana Popescu is a scientist with experience in the pharmaceutical industry and more than 10 years spent in academic biomedical research, in France, Belgium, and the USA. She holds a PharmD and an MS in biophysics & cellular biotechnology, and a Ph.D. in molecular pharmacology & metabolism, and a DU in Aging & Longevity from the University of Lille, France. She worked in numerous research laboratories within the ‘Institut Pasteur de Lille’, INSERM, European Genomic Institute for Diabetes, ‘Université Libre de Bruxelles’, and the University of Kentucky, on research projects covering various biomedical fields including diabetes, nutrition, neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases. She manages research projects as a group leader at Barnstable Brown Diabetes Research Center in Lexington, KY; the implications of cellular senescence in metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity represent one of her research interests. She is also a mentor for two courses for undergrad students, a former president of the KY Chapter of AWIS, and is constantly involved with activities in science communication and educational programs for STEM.
